Labrot and Graham to Woodford

There's a lot of history and 'lore' behind bourbon so discuss both here.

Labrot and Graham to Woodford

Unread postby angelshare » Sun Sep 26, 2010 7:06 am

Sorry if this answer was search-able, couldn't seem to find it-

When we visited what is now Woodford in the late nineties, it was operating under the "historical" name Labrot and Graham.

1) When did it change?

2) Why did it change? Marketing? Legal issues?

Dave, I think it was in 2004. See this old thread http://bourbonenthusiast.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=133&hilit=Woodford+Reserve

Chris Morris said it was because people couldn't or wouldn't pronounce Labrot correctly as LA BRO and instead said LAB ROT.

I'm sure both Mike Veach and Chuck Cowdry will post their points-of-view.

I think it may have coincided too with the move to use pot still production in the mingling.

It was purely a marketing decision. When the Woodford Reserve brand started to take off--it was much more successful than they thought it would be--they decided not to confuse the brand image by having the distillery operate under a different name. Technically, the name is Woodford Reserve Distillery, Labrot and Graham, proprietors.
