Interesting bottle of Old Crow

There's a lot of history and 'lore' behind bourbon so discuss both here.

Interesting bottle of Old Crow

Unread postby bourbonv » Tue Mar 23, 2010 11:41 am

I continue to learn things about prohibition bottles everytime I get one. I thought all bottles of bourbon sold during prohibition had the green bonded tax stamp, but yesterday I received a bottle of 17 years old Old Crow without such a stamp. The reason - It was taken out of bond in 1916 after the 8 year bonding period had ended and it could not be considered a bonded whiskey at that point. The whiskey was made at W A Gaines Old Crow distillery but taken out of bond in 1916 and left at the Louisville Warehouse co. until it was bottled and sold in 1925. There is a strip seal across the cork with the spring 1908/spring 1925 dates on it, but it is not a green bottled-in-bond stamp.

I am looking for a good reason to open it ...

While Tuesday is reason enough for me, the sampler is coming up and I'm sure that Joe and Doug would enjoy a sip.

A good reason? A good reason is right now. Open that thing and send a detailed taste note!

The ADI is good time to open it. I do want to share it in a way that does the most good. Another option is if the Louisville CVB brings in some writers for Derby. If they don't, then I guess it will be the ADI meeting.

Well it looks like the ADI meeting is going to be when I open this bottle. I know John will join me for a drink of this whiskey and I have asked Bill Owens to join us as well. Are there others here that are coming to Louisville for the meeting and want to join us for some 17yo Old Crow Made in 1908?

You guys need to PM this information back and forth. To put this out where the rest of us can see it is mean!

Maybe you ought to include in your tasting group the company officials who make the current swill that disrespects the good Dr.'s name. Perhaps they can be shamed into resurecting the label.
