A good illustration of what makes bourbon industry history so maddening. That many different companies occupied, over time, just eight blocks of the street.

Mike,
This stirred up thoughts and happy memories!

A couple of years ago, Doug, Howie and I were on a Jeep tour with you and we went past a site a couple blocks from the waterfront where I believe you said Old Grand Dad had been distilled in the 1950s, as a supplement to the main plant in Frankfort.

Is this the 110 W. Main site you list in this thread? I google mapped that address and it doesn't seem to be the same location. I think it's a fairly small, (perhaps triangular and on a slope) site now converted to shops and restaurants. Also, if you could fill in any other details of this sister Grand Dad (now that's an oxymoron) facility, I'd be very appreciative. For instance, was it only the 80 and 86 proof bottlings that would get Louisville whiskey? This would jibe with my experience that several bottles I have of Grand Dad list Louisville, but none were bonds.

Or, perhaps my memory is just really bad.

Roger

Sounds like you're describing what is now called Distillery Commons, which is adjacent to Cave Hill Cemetery and nowhere near the river.

I believe the AMS operation was at the 7th and Bernheim location.

Old Grand Dad did own the site that is now "Distillery Commons" until after prohibition. The building on Main street was sales offices, with maybe some warehouse capability for whiskey barrels in transit. Louisville was the center of transportation and the center of the bourbon universe, so most distilleries had offices here as they shipped whiskey elsewhere. That is what this list is all about. If I took the time to do the same for the other streets with whiskey companies that were in Louisville, Market street (the next street south running east-west from Main) would have many other distillery offices/rectifiers, and the streets conecting the two would also have many offices.
