In November 1933 the end of prohibition was in sight and Fortune Magazine published a seeries of articles on whiskey and the companies that would soon play an important part in supplying Americans with spirits. These articles include National Distillers Products Corp.; Glenomore Distilleries; Frankfort Distillery; Hiram Walker; Schenley; Publicker; Dewar, Haig, Walker and Gordon; Bacardi; and Bernheim. These articles discuss production and imports, but more importantly they discuss the people in charge. The articles gives a look at the big players in the post prohibition business and discusses such items as Schenley's attempt to acquire Glenmore. These articles give the researcher an important insight to the liquor industry at the verge of repeal. It also looks at the shady side of prohibition which includes photographs from the St. Valentine's Day Massacre.
This magazine is an important addition to the bourbon library. It is well illustrated including some color labels and advertising. The articles are well written and researched giving the researcher a very good picture of the industry that would take over after repeal. The one glaring ommision to the magazine is the lack of coverage of Brown-Forman and Stitzel and Weller (still seperate companies in 1933).
