The Kentucky Mint Julep, by Colonel Joe Nickell. Lexington, Ky., University Press of Kentucky, 2003. Contents, Notes, Bibliography, Illustrated. pp. 83.

This is a small book about the Mint Julep, a drink that is always associated with bourbon. It is a very simple history of the drink with some quotes and stories about the drink from famous people. It also includes many recipes for making the drink and a brief description of distilleries on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

This book is very straight forward and an easy read. The information is for the most part the common legends and lore of the drink and bourbon, but the author does point out some other points of view. For example he tells the Elijah Craig story of bourbon's origin, but does point the reader to Crowgey's book for reasons as to why this story is more lore than history. The stories and quotes are informative in a fun way and the recipes are varied. He starts by giving Henry Clay's recipe and then adds several other from more recent sources. He ends by giving some of his own recipes including a non-alcoholic version.

The book is worth adding to a bourbon library because every bourbon bar should have at least one book on Mint Juleps.
