A great start for the folks who helped start the Museum of the American Cocktail, this book lit my cocktail geekdom on fire. David Wondrich begins the journal with a detailed history of punch. We're not talking sherbert wedding punch folks. Robert Hess http://www.drinkboy.com follows with a delightful read about the evolution of the Martini. Several other cocktail histories are included, such as the Bellini, Pina Colada, and the Gimlet. Darcy O'Neil makes simple syrup so complicated in his article titled "The Definitive Guide to Simple Syrup" that I vow to never use it again. He does give a scientific background to better understand the chemistry behind mixing sugar with water. And I lied. I made simple syrup right after reading this chapter. The first edition ends with an article by guru Gary Regan on researching historical drink references for professional writing. Guess who is fondly mentioned? Our very own Mike Veach!

A delightful must read for every classic cocktail buff. The writers could have used a good copy editor to catch several errors, but overall, a great start for a journal that every bar buff should be subscribing to. http://www.mixellany.com

Gary and Mardee are great people and I always enjoyed working with them. I am glad they remembered me fondly in their article! I am hoping to see them next week when they are in town with Jim Murray, Lew Bryson and others to taste Birthday bourbon and some of the other new products coming out of Woodford this October (Chris Morris said they would be delayed do to trouble getting the glassware ready in time for a September release).
