Glen Breton is intended as a new world scotch and everything about it is more connected to the Scottish malt whisky tradition than it is to any North American tradition. However, the Scotch Whisky Association wants to prevent them from using "Glen" in their name.

Mike Veach was one of the first people to challenge the conventional wisdom that the American whiskey tradition was primarily a result of Scots-Irish immigration. John Lipman was one of the first people to identify and name another distinct distilling tradition, that of Swiss/German immigrants. One major contribution of that tradition appears to be the preference for distilling rye grain.
