I can't remember what thread it was in that Gary was wishing for a rye whiskey with a rye content higher than the now-customary 51 percent.

I have just learned about this product, Wasmund's Rye Spirit, made by Rick Wasmund at Copper Fox Distillery in Virginia. Sold at 124 proof (62% ABV), this un-aged spirit is made from a mash of 66 percent rye and 33 percent hand-malted barley. The malt is smoked with fruitwood smoke, 60 percent apple, 40 percent cherry.

Binny's has it for $22.99 per 750 ml bottle.

If it is unaged, does that mean it is clear like water?

It should be clear, yes.

We're curious about the flavor of this also. Probably due to the quirks of living in a control state, we still haven't seen it on the shelves - even though it's produced about 15 miles from our house!

Have any of the Virginians here seen it yet?

I stopped at 5 ABC stores over the weekend and I did not see it.
I saw another Wasmund's product though. it was their single malt. I didn't pay much attention to it other then that it was only aged two years.
It may be on the shelves later even though it is not listed on VA ABC's website neither is the single malt

Just picked up a bottle here in Indiana. I have been looking for something close to moonshine (that can be obtained legally) and this really seems to fit the bill! I tried an other brand of corn whiskey and it was not at all like any moonshine I've ever had. In my opinion, this is like the best moonshine imaginable. I used to work at Mount Vernon and helped with the re-creation of George Washington's distillery (his recipe was 2/3 rye), and this is just like what they make there for about 1/4 of the price.

I've seen this stuff on shelves before and for me it raises some questions:

What is this for exactly, drinking for people who want to drink raw spirits for whatever reason or people who want some white dog to barrel to age their own whiskey? Probably both, just curious about the various white dogs I have seen on shelves. They seem expensive for what they are ...
