Cody Road Whiskey (100% Rye)

Anyone try this rye yet?

It is labeled as 100% rye and 80 proof.

It is bottled in Le Claire Iowa which is supposedly the home or birthplace of Buffalo Bill Cody?

To me it has a quick spice upfront with a very fast finish at first but then you get a boomerang return.

It sure seems to be a fairly young whiskey but still pretty good.

I paid $36 for the 750ml...not a bad neat sipper.

Supposedly it uses "local" rye grains from Iowa near Mississippi River Distilling Company...

They also make a bourbon...that I haven't tasted as of yet.

Anyone else give this a try?

Joe.

Squire,

Unfortunately I did not see this before I left on my recent business trip...

I am out in Cali and won't be back at home until Thursday evening...I do not remember seeing any age statement...but...I will admit that when I bought the bottle it was after 2 hours of "tasting" at the local liquor shop...LOL...

I tried it again on Saturday evening and had the same thought about the flavor profile being somewhat light on the finish for a 100% rye...it did have a lot of graininess to the flavor profile though which to me says "young" whiskey...

I will look on Thursday if there is any statement...but I don't remember one...although like I said...at the time...apparently I wasn't remembering much...ha-ha...

Here is the web page for the Cody Road Rye... http://mrdistilling.com/frame/products_rye.shtml

Squire,

Sorry for the long delayed response...been traveling a lot for work the last 3 weeks...in fact I'm back out in SoCal as I type...

Anyway...I looked over the bottle and there is NO age statement anywhere that I can see...

Joe.

Joe is it labeled as a Straight Bourbon or just Bourbon? I ask because I can't tell from their web page.

Squire,

I am going by memory (keep in mind I've had a few brews tonight at hotel...LOL)...

But it is not labeled as a bourbon at all...it is a Rye...

I will take another look at the bottle when I get home on Thursday.

The fact that is is listed as 100% rye yet it has a very short finish...has me wondering is all...

It is good...don't get me wrong...but Whistle Pig which is also a 100% Rye has a much longer finish.

Joe

All I can tell from the pictures I've found is the label only says 'Rye' and 'Whiskey" and lacking the word straight means it doesn't have to disclose it's age. I understand they use 30 gallon barrels there which, though they don't age whisky faster, they do color it sooner.

I haven't found a review that says much other than what the distillery provides in it's PR stuff.

I'm not sure about their rye, but their bourbon wasn't very good at all. I was supplied a rather large sample by a friend. Couldn't finish it. Laughed about it later. He gave me the large sample because he thought it sucked too. One of the very few that I've had, that found its way down the drain.
