The former, sad to say.

The product they are selling is a tasty, well made rye whiskey. It is well more than two years old. It would be virtually impossible for them to duplicate that product themselves, and they certainly could not do it in two years.

There is absolutely no reason to believe the product they are selling now is product they distilled and every reason to believe it is not.

SOLD!

I do like the Templeton, it has some wonderful floral and fruity elements......... even though it comes up a bit short, in my opinion, at the finish, especially for a rye.

In all honesty.........I am embarrassed to say this.........but, I just forgot about the aging.

I agree..........from my experience this is not a 2 year in the barrel whiskey.

I will give it another go and see if my taster was off on the day I first tasted it in so far as the finish goes.

.............I stand by my earlier impressions..........the exception being that Templeton is good enough to drink on its own.........almost as an aperitif, such is it spicy sweetness.

I went back through this thread and still stand by everything I wrote in December.

As for the "legend" of Templeton, I have no problem with marketing fluff, which that is. They take a core of something real--that perhaps Templeton was a center of moonshining activity during Prohibition--and build that up into a full mythology. The claims about Al Capone, for example, are made by communities all over the Midwest, even as far away as the Land Between the Lakes region of Kentucky. I've heard those stories about the big black car with Illinois plates coming to pick up the local product about a million times. The historical reality is that the Chicago Outfit was importing whiskey from Canada, as well as distilling its own throughout the Chicago area, particularly in Chicago Heights, and exporting spirits to the rest of the region. Not the other way around.

Like I said, it's a good story and no less credible than the stories told by a lot of other whiskey brands, most of which spin a tale out of a germ of truth, but please don't take them at face value.

I've never said that Templeton isn't a good product. Whoever made it should be proud of it, but its maker is not in Iowa.

Next on my list: Santa Claus and unicorns.

Consider, along these lines, Clyde May's Conecuh Ridge. When the product was introduced in early 2004, they admitted it was being made by a distillery in Kentucky, until they got going enough to make it in Alabama. It is now 2009 and it's still made in Kentucky.

I'm happy to give Templeton, or anybody, the benefit of the doubt, but do you know how many micro-distillers have started with a buy-and-bottle product and eventually transitioned it to a product they made?

Zero.

Here's an article from the Des Moines register I thought you all might find interesting.

I may be wrong, but I do not think they even have a still.

I was shown a picture once of what they claimed was their still and it could have been. It just looked like a steel tank, but there are some stills that look like that. What I can say with confidence is that nothing they have bottled and sold was distilled in Templeton Iowa.

Perhaps, although the original still pictured on their web site was clipped from a still manufacturer's catalog.
