Bottling InfoNose: Outstanding aroma, kicked off by a spicy prickle. Satisfyingly deep, gentle vanilla-ed and molassed with even a sprig of sweet mint.

Palate: A rip-roaring waxy sweetness checked by a big build up of vanilla-rich oak. Corn is chewy and rye offers a rich textured background.

Finish: Dries at last as the oak takes command, but rye offers extra depth and a layer of bitterness as does a lingering licorice.

Comment: Big, moody, uncompromising and complex beyond belief.

One of the world's great whiskies.
Jim Murray, Whisky Magazine

Wine Enthusiast rating: 93

Burnished gold in color, this Bourbon brings a m???lange of aromas to the nose: honey, vanilla, oak, toffee, and a suggestion of coriander are all there. The body is big, and on the palate, this becomes a very spicy, masculine whiskey with a complex spicy mustiness and notes of leather, tobacco, overripe oranges, and a surprising smokiness not often found in a Bourbon.

The finish is long and lush.

Info on this bottle:Standard BT
Nose:Vanilla and that "whiskey" alcohol smell
Taste:Again, Vanilla with pepper
Finish:initial sting on the throat, lasts about 2 minutes. then morphs into a lovely sweet flavor.
Overall:OK, this is my first review and I really don't know what I'm doing. I have decided to start drinking my bourbon neat or on the rocks. My second bottle of BT, not as good as the first. This bottle I bought in CT about 2 years ago since it is not easy to buy in PA. Anyway, I 've made BT my daily pour and believe it to be a good sip at a fair and reasonable price. I visited the distillery about 10 years ago and was impressed with the pride that the worker have in their product. This bourbon is not as smooth as some claim but it isn't harsh like others in the price range. BT does it's job!

Yes there are better bourbons out there but in deciding where to throw out the anchor, I weigh quality, taste and price and find BT to be hard to beat. Get it, drink it and be happy!

Purchased at:Austin, Tx. Local Mom and Pop
Purchased for:$25
Info on this bottle:Kentucky Bourbon
Nose:Smokey and spicey
Taste:A bit more bite than its cousin, Eagle Rare. Initial smoke flavor is a bit pronounced with a mild, but apparent burn. Tobacco hint with a rather spicey first bite.
Finish:The finish is a touch minty and the smoke is pronounced in a big way. A very sweet aftertaste as the mint and smoke linger.
Overall:One of the more unique bourbons I have tasted. I'm not sure I would serve this to someone new to bourbon as neat, it definitely seems to be a boutique ambition. Mixes very well and appreciates ice to balance the pronounced mint and smoke flavor.

Nose:Sweet Vanilla, evident ethanol, a little molasses after ice added
Taste:Medium sweet, light oak, velvety mouth feel. Adding an ice cube added a hint of tobacco and moderates sweetness
Finish:mild spice early, a little oak, lingering sweetness, somewhat short finish
Overall:Not a bad bourbon, a little sweeter than I like. Decent value but prefer EW single barrel in same price range. Rating 7/10

Nose:I'm getting an astringency on the nose with a mingling of caramel,oak,corn...And a fruityiness like apples?
Taste:Smooth corn sweetness with caramel then fading to a dryer oak...
Finish:Fairly lengthy...A similar finish as the nose but without the potential astringency I detected. There is the caramel and corn but the oak comes through with a little rye prickly heat that does linger...
Overall:This is a very good bourbon, but,I'm sure it warrants all the fuss.Frankly,Old Forrester or Knob Creek for a couple of bucks more,is a more flavourful whiskey....So is Jim Beam Black for over $10 less!!!This is on par, however, with Woodford Reserve minus the big hits of butterscotch on the nose that Woodford provides.A solid 7.5 or 8 out of 10....

Purchased at:Luke's Liquor's Cape Cod MA
Purchased for:$24 on sale.
Info on this bottle:Buffalo Trace - Luke's Single Barrel Select Gold Stamp
Nose:This is the lighter side of BT with less pine and oak, more straight laced with younger knotty pine and varnish. It's lean, round, and a great buy. Sawn wood.
Taste:The viscosity is off the charts good for BT... it's the most round I've had but a tad lean. A mild burn, very easy drinking. This is not the staunch BT of 2005 or 06. It's simpler, easier drinking, and comes across like an 80 Proofer.
Finish:Medium. Not dry... lingers for a minute with some good clove and wood. Grassy.
Overall:I give it 3.5 Stars on the BT list. It's great for any beginner to get a taste. I'd grade it a B-

BB

Purchased at:The Bourbon Society
Info on this bottle:Single Barrel from The Bourbon Society
Nose:Caramel and the longer it sits, the richer the caramel gets. Ripe apples and apricots with some fine leather and sweet spices.
Taste:Very brandy like with some rich fruit flavors - Apples and peaches with sweet spices - clove and ginger over laid with lots of caramel and oak.
Finish:WOW, What a finish. This is spicey and dry with oak and pepper, but at the same time very fruity with caramel apples. The longer it sits in the glass the more it changes in aroma and finish. After a while the fruit takes the lead and the spices and oak are subdued but then the spice comes back.
Overall:This is a great bourbon. It proves that a barrel selection does not have to be barrel proof and unfiltered to be superior. In fact, I doubt the barrel proof unfiltered was as good as this final product. The barrel sample was probably much woodier and bitter.

Nose:Fantastic nose! Citrus, vanilla, dried apricot hit me first. Then molasis and pumpkin pie! A tad floral.
Taste:Smooth body. Leads with maple syrup, sweet corn, and orange. Subtle hints of vanilla and caramel. Smokey for a bourbon.
Finish:A nice long, gradual fade. Starts a little sweet, then anise and rye, finishing with a dry caramel and vanilla.
Overall:A nice, complex bourbon. Fantastic bargain! Compares well with bourbons in the $40 range.

Purchased at:Binny's SB
Purchased for:Gift from Bob
Nose:That is a nice little nose here. I have had a few BTs, but this nose may take the cake. This is as close to the Barrel samples I have had in the watered down version. Sweetness with this rye. No spice interfering with the rye and corn blend in this masterpiece. There are flashback thoughts of WT in older days.
Taste:The taste is everything as much in greatness as the nose. That sweet corn mixed with a rye that seems to have great age for such youth in very pleasing??? Happyness in a glass.
Finish:Ahhhhhh just what the doctor ordered???. Full mouth with great oil fill and balance.
Overall:I need to stack this against the Julio???s SB from this year, but this is spot on. The best BT was the best.

Purchased for:? don't remember
Info on this bottle:Buffalo Trace (2005 Gold Sticker)
Nose:New bottle upon opening: Beautiful. Sight pine & varnish with some tobacco and over-ripe fruit. Dusty. Vanilla/Cognac-like aromas. Mellowed, brown fruit/raisin, fig, now apricot. Slightly perfumed. An undertow of fruit compote and woodlands. Orange peel.
Taste:Smooth as silk, sloooow to climb and wow... comfortable and subtle burn that lingers with residual sugars mingling everywhere around the gumline and tip of the tongue. Soft, delicate, with a brine at 90 seconds. This is magic.
Finish:Light and easy with a semi-dry and briny ending that lingers into the minutes.
Overall:I knew this bottle was going to great because I purchased about a half dozen back in Spring 2008. It's a 5-Star bourbon in book, one that surpasses many at twice the price. Fabulous. BB

Nose:I smell tons and tons of Vanilla in this bourbon. I actually went to the spice cupboard and pulled out a bottle of imitation vanilla extract to compare and found the smells quite similar. BT had a little more clove and peppery scent.
Taste:At first very hot, not too sweet, as might be indicated by the vanilla nose, a little watery and thin, but nice balance and smoothness.
Finish:Quite the burn. The finish on this is long, and if you are in the mood to wait, it will take you about 3 minutes to extinguish the burn in this bourbon. That was a nice surprise at 90 proof. The finish lasts as long as many much higher proof offerings.
Overall:This was my first time with Buffalo Trace. It has a very distinct nose and a nice finish, but it lacks some of the flavor notes I love in a good bourbon. No orange or honey, and vanilla and clove spice notes give way too quickly to the peppery finish. Not a bad bourbon, but not my first choice either.

Nose:Butterscotch, corn, vanilla, leather, rye (grain), hay, and brown sugar provide an excellent assortment of aromas from which to launch yoself into a sippin session. I ain't leaving this scene 'til my nose is ready to go and right now he ain't making no movement cause he still sniffing.
Taste:Soft semi-thick corny sweetness that offers up some mild spices like nutmeg and allspice alongside a mild dose of oak to tease the palate before a burst of cinnamon and pepper that rakes the back of the mouth. Very nice but not quite, in my opinion, the equal of the nose in richness.
Finish:Moderate to long...............the spice totes the load a ways.
Overall:I would rate this fellow somewhere t'wixt good and excellent. Enjoyable middle shelf bourbon.........which is probably where it was intended to sit.

Purchased at:Dallas, TX
Purchased for:$17
Info on this bottle:750mL standard bottling
Nose:Hay, corn, Virginia tobacco. Bit of brown sugar. Maybe toasted marshmallow.
Taste:Initial wash of zesty sweet tobacco. A bright corn note on top, not oily but certainly sweet, almost Karo-like. Good brown sugar again, tinged with vanilla. Hint of mint? No real char or smoke, just sweet notes.
Finish:Bubblegummy sweetness lingers, a touch of earthy brown sugar and tobacco underneath. That's as close as this bottle comes to any "musty" house character.
Overall:Very good bourbon and a terrific value. Trace is always a good pour for me, never a world-beater. There's just enough intrigue from tobacco, brown sugar, and a little peppery spice to keep the sweetness from becoming cloying. Something I like to keep around, and a bottle that could do well in vattings with heavier, more charred whiskeys.

Nose:rye with vanilla and what seems like a floral but can't put a finger on it
Taste:almost numbs the tip of the tongue with all the flavor on the back of the mouth
a rye taste followed by a nice floral/ vanilla taste followed by an oak taste
Finish:i love the finish of this whiskey it is the burn that you want in a whiskey but not at all over powering
it almost feels like it centers in the middle of the throat and washes up the sides to give you a nice warm feeling while the flavor continues
Overall:one of my favorite bourbons
and for the price i wish i would have added it to my bar sooner
everything you could want in a bourbon

side note: this is my first review and i never would have thought i would have been so hard to do a review. :)

Info on this bottle:Standard bottling
Nose:[Olfactory impressions] Vanilla, Brown Sugar, Dr. Pepper?
Taste:[Description of the initial taste impression] Not as sweet as I expected, very grassy - a lot of corn, hint of cinnamon, slight cloves
Finish:[Description of the lingering taste impression] Turns woody and then drops off rather quickly
Overall:[Overall impression of this bottling] Hate to say it, but I'm a bit disapponted - possibly because my last pour was Van Winkle 107? This isn't bad hooch, but maybe my expectations were too high. Won't replace my stand-by; OGD. Still, give me a bottle and I'll be your friend.

Purchased at:Kenwood Liquors, Oak Lawn, IL
Purchased for:$15
Info on this bottle:Specially Selected by Kenwood Liquors
Nose:Mild Oak, Corn Sweetness, Dried Apples, wheaty pie crust.
Taste:There is a strong influence of the oak and a hot alcohol feel, just short of a burn. On ice this heat and sting to the tongue really fades.
Finish:Melts away leaving a rich carmel and vanilla vapor in the mouth. On ice there is an excellent balance and flatness to the sip. The flavor remains constant and the sweet vanilla taste as well as aftertaste becomes more accessible to the front and back of the mouth.
Overall:This is an excellent value in bourbon. It is excellent on ice, where is becomes very smooth and flavorful without becoming too watery and bland. Tremendous balance and depth of flavor without the burn associated with that level of flavor in most bourbon.

Nose:Woodsy notes of cedar and caramelized maple sugar up front with a backdrop of spicy basil and mint with all of the vanilla and oak to boot.
Taste:More fruit than in the nose but the spiceyness is the dominant player with a very unique and interesting blend that has something (smoked orange rind?) other bourbons don't have but is very pleasing.
Finish:Moderate to short which is surprising to me with the nose as woodsy as it is. It is very balanced and fits the phrase " sugar and sice and everything nice".
Overall:I don't know what I'm going to do with my OF 100 now because I don't care for it anymore. Buffalo Trace came in strong and just took the title " favorite everyday pour" with ease.

Nose:Soft, sweet, mellow, oaky with a little spice. Sweet like caramel but darker like brown sugar or even maple syrup. A base of deep, rich leather, dried fruit with slight vanilla overtones.
Taste:A solid corn sweetness, balanced very well with caramel and vanilla oak, is trampled by a rambunctious kick of rye spice. A sweet drop of caramel resonates throughout.
Finish:Medium, fairly dry. A healthy dash of spice plays off a diminishing sweetness.
Overall:No water is needed for this one although it does very well over ice. Being a low to mid-shelf kinda guy, this one's an all-time favorite. I would recommend this (among some others) to anyone looking for a 'sweet' bourbon.

Nose:An excellent bourbon nose with everything in place. Vanilla, oak, char, leather, rye, corn, caramel all make very respectable appearances.
Taste:Just as the nose proposes, vanilla, wood, caramel, and spice splash across the mouth playfully. Excellent flavors and balance with a nice dose of corn sweetness rounding out the picture.
Finish:Decently long and satisfying.
Overall:A better than good bourbon. A perfect comparision between an excellent 90 proof bourbon and an excellent 100 proof bourbon with the same flavor profile, can be done between Buffalo Trace and Rock Hill Farms. I find the RHFs to be a bit richer and more rewarding...........but the Buffalo Trace gives up very little to the RHFs.

Nose:Lots of oak and some slight cherry and dried fruit notes. Somehow, it comes across a little bit harsh to me.
Taste:More subtle than the nose w/ a nice interplay of woodsy flavors and a twinge of vanilla.
Finish:Again, I find it a bit harsh here. It comes off as overly woody and dry. Has sort of a raw feeling on the back of my throat. Somewhat astringent like chewing on chip of American oak or something. (Well--not nearly that bad but definitely lacking finesse to put it in mild terms.)
Overall:I feel I gave this a good chance and it's certainly decent enough but there was just something about it that rubbed me the wrong way. I really had trouble seeing eye to eye w/ it. Given the number of positive reviews I see of this, I'm wondering or even hoping that I just got a bottle that was somehow a little off. It looks like Sam's has a special bottling of it now that I might buy sometime.

Taste:Smooth and slightly oily texture, and a little sweet. Corn, almond, hazelnut, and oak all very well balanced.
Finish:Moderate finish length with a touch of rye on the palate; slight alcohol burn.
Overall:Very enjoyable. I would drink this one straight with or without ice. A little too refined to mix with coke. I would say it's a notch above Maker's Mark. B.T. is not available in GA because our distribution is total crap due to antiquated state laws. GA will do anything to protect the distributors which do nothing but keep voters employed.

Nose:I found most all of the characterisitcs of aroma others posting previous listings have posted, therefore, for the sake of brevity, I'll not repeat it.
Taste:I found the taste very pleasing to my palate. After the initial taste test, I slowly and respectfully consumed a generous portion.
Finish:Warm. It gave me the enjoyment of a smooth and velvety journey going down, then the peppery, but not harsh, tingle in my belly. It spead slowly to the rest of my body which gave me a long lasting smile.
Overall:I now buy Buffalo Trace at my favorite liquor store in KY as a consumable staple of my own liquor cabinet. I keep it on hand for private celebrations of small victories or accomplishments, (like staying alive all day,) and as a treat to novices of bourbon drinking. It is the standard by which I judge all other bourbons. It is my barometer. There are better, but there are many not as good. Hence it is my stape bourbon.

Purchased at:Nattachooga, TN, on the N side of and rat beside the Tenn river
Purchased for:$20
Nose:A wonderful nose that floats up to caress your smeller with a host of delightful aromas. There is vanilla, leather, nuts, honey, clover, pecan pie, toffee, bubble gum, and a very light whiff of chocolate. Rich and multi-layered! Yee Haw!!
Taste:Nice rich sweetness upfront, thick with vanilla and corn and very pleasing. Mid way cross the mouth comes a slice of spice and pepper. This stuff gone make yo mouf happy and proud to be here. Imo be a cowboy when I grow up!!
Finish:A nice moderate finish that just dares you not to have another sip. The sweetness holds its own agin the spice and pepper. Imo tote TWO guns!!
Overall:Oooh, Momma, how could yo boy miss it so bad first time around? My first review of this was way wide of the mark. As I think back, when I did that review, it was the day I was sent out by my wife into the garden to eat worms for some serious offense............and lemmesee, that was the day when I also.........oops, I know, I know, I'm quitting!..............I'm going to Montana for to throw the houlihan, get along little doggies, get along kinda slow, it's yor misfortune and none of my own.......

Purchased at:Tucker's Whiskey Dispensery, Cumberland, KY
Purchased for:$18
Nose:A beautiful nose with vanilla, oak, rye, mint, candy corn, and coconut cream pie. Pleasing, sweet, and rich.
Taste:Sweet caramel upfront with mild spicy flavors mid-palate. A slight disappointment compared to the nose. I don't find the depth and complexity I was hoping for.
Finish:I find the finish of BT to be just a bit short. It fades quickly, reminding me of Maker's Mark.
Overall:I just knew I would fall in love with this bourbon, and I have been looking forward to trying it. Maybe I unfairly expected too much. It is a very good bourbon with several minor flaws. Certainly, it is worth what it costs, but in my judgement, it is not top shelf!

Purchased for:18.00
Info on this bottle:Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky
Proof Of this Bottle:90
Nose:This one will wake your nose right up. No doubt this is Kentucky Bourbon the way it was back in the day.
Taste:Very fine. Of the medium priced Bourbons this is by far the best. Strong oak and sweetness. Must be the extra corn used. Make no mistake this is a fine whisky. I suggest you put a bottle on your bar.
Finish:Very nice and warm Long alcohol burn. Stays with you awhile
Overall:Everyone should have a bottle. This is Kentucky Bourbon like your Grandfather drank.

Purchased at:Liquor Control Board of Ontario in Toronto
Purchased for:$37 (CDN)
Info on this bottle:Standard bottling
Nose:Light smoke with wood and medicinal hints
Taste:Rich and sweetish. Seems more mature than Trace when first released. Good wood extract and smooth grain flavors, hints of rye and spice in background. Very well integrated.
Finish:Softly unrolling smoke, wood, spice and barrel frame tastes. Wintergreen echos in the finish.
Overall:Very high quality, a great bourbon by any definition. Recently I found an early 90's AA 107 and it is similar to the Trace except with more alcohol. Also, the current Trace reminds me of a cross between Elmer T. Lee and Blanton Original, it is the type of mingling I try to make at home. I can't improve on it.

Purchased at:Binny's - Downtown Chicago
Purchased for:$ 19.61
Info on this bottle:Special Single Barrel for Binny's
Proof Of this Bottle:90
Nose:Since my last review was from a single barrel bottling done for the Wine Cellar in Memphis, I thought I would see how this bottling for Binny's compared. The color is just as good and the nose is unmistakedly Buffalo Trace.
Taste:I could not tell any difference from the Wine Cellar bottling, it was the wonderful tastes described above.
Finish:Here's where I found a slight difference. Just at the very back of my tongue as it was getting ready to jump on down, this strong flavor of caramel hit me. This is strange because there are four tast areas on the tongue and the one at the very back is where you taste bitterness. So this flavor over-rode the bitter area and got direclty up to the olfactory senses and set of a wonderful finish.
Overall:I know I sound like a BT cheer leader ( wait till I crack open the single barrel W.L. Weller 12 yr. and 10 Yr. single barrel Eagle Rare that I also got at Binny's), but I have had other bourbons in the recent past and I just can't figure out why I should spend my hard earned dollars on something else.

Review from bunghole (BourbonEnthusiast Review ID 110)
Purchased at:Gift From Mike Veach.
Nose:I just love to look at this Bourbon - just a lovely shade of amber with a burnished copper cast. It really sparkles in the glass like the true gem it is.

The nose is very lively and nicely complex for it's relative youth. Rich vanilla and sweet corn topnotes play over a thick rhythm section of candies - caramel & toffee with smokey tobacco and charred oak accents. There are some fruity/floral tones deep in the mix - maybe orange zest/orange blossoms.
Taste:Buffalo Trace exhibits a wonderful viscosity in the glass and is mouth coating, but not too thick.

Lively on the palate! Charred oak and corn sweetness trade riffs with a smokey tobacco malty something or other (damn accurate, huh?).
Finish:A civilized finish of respectable length. Some anise and non-specific rye spicyness with some heat. Drys during the decay. Some oak tannicness mixed with a malt tartness adds some dissonance.
Overall:I like Buffalo Trace and it is my wife's favorite Bourbon. It's a good solid Bourbon with an excellent presentation, and a wonderful name. I prefer it's older brother - the ten year old Ancient Ancient Age's flavor and finish, but Buffalo Trace has excellent color and a great nose. All-in-all a very pleasant flavor variation of the good old BT #2 mashbill. Highly Reccomended!

Review from jbohan (BourbonEnthusiast Review ID 103)
Purchased at:Memphis, TN
Purchased for:$20
Info on this bottle:Special Bottling for the Wine Cellar
Proof Of this Bottle:90
Nose:Defines what bourbon should should smell like. Make sure you take the time to take it in, close your eyes and you will be in the middle of the warehouse with barrels all around you.
Taste:Starts off full and complex while secondary flavors soon burst forth, the liquorice and oak, with hints of more exotic spices, hold it on the tongue as long as you can .
Finish: This is what sets this bourbon apart, the finsih is strong but not burning and will last for a long long time. Don't put too much ice in the glass, it will all melt before you finish the two (or three) fingers you poured.
Overall:This was a special single barrel bottling that BT will do for retailers. At the price, you can't find a better bourbon. Since it is not available where I live, I guard each bottle closely and cherish each drink I pour.

Review from bourbonv (BourbonEnthusiast Review ID 102)
Purchased at:Gift from Ken Weber
Info on this bottle:Standard bottle from liqor store
Proof Of this Bottle:90
Nose:Sweet corn and rye grains with some oak and caramel. Strong floral tones maybe roses, but a hint of liquorice spice.
Taste:Corn silk and caramel in a strong first burst of flavor with a secondary addition of liquorice and oak. No heat to this drink at all makes it very smooth and refreshing.
Finish:Very clean with a little lingering oak and caramel.
Overall:A very good bourbon for a mixed drink but with flavor enough to stand on its own as a palate cleansing after dinner drink.
